I blog, therefore I'm alive

[pondering]

Many, many weeks ago, we were at eL’s to celebrate her birthday. Not only were the usual suspects there, but also her friends from her London faux-spy training days. Kiddingly, my blog came up in conversation. Since eL doesn’t blog, icyblog was one (albeit tiny) way for her friends to keep up with her life. Conversely, when I hang out with mark, eric and heipel, each one of us do blog, but all for different reasons.

So, while I made the expected new year resolution to promise to blog more, I immediately wondered what that meant. What more should I do on my blog? What more should I blog about? Write more stories about my friends? Whine endlessly about the state of our world? Should I encourage everyone to blog, for a reason like succumbing to peer pressure?

It was a lovely evening, that evening, the food was plentiful and the conversation varied. I could have tried to remember enough to write a post for their benefit, so that Dr. Sky, moneypenny, Lady Christie and Le (eL’s virtual twin) could see themselves almost like characters in eL’s life, perhaps like in a Jane Austen’s novel, eL’s pride in her friends and my prejudices in my words of this post. Someone could get married at the end of this post, but it will not be Emma Thompson.

In trying to capture this evening, I ask myself what picture do I see? When I see my own name in someone else’s blog, I am reminded of that moment with the author. For a second I might feel like a star in a film or a victim in a newspaper article. In some odd way, this could be my 15 minutes of fame.

I’ve heard a lot about Dr. Sky and her friends she made in London. Over endless coffees or glasses of wine, eL had regaled me with tales of late evening parties, unrequited love and betrayal. Each person, each name was like a faceless name in a blog post. Her stories would run through the evening, like never ending paragraphs, her words interrupted with fits of laughter and silent reminiscences. I imagined these faces, and that evening I had finally put faces to her words.

Lady Christie was as lady-like as I had imagined and you can see the best friend in Dr. Sky’s eyes. Their voices strangely matched their personalities. We also got to meet Dr. Sky’s moneypenny and again hung out with the always delightful Le. Along with Sugar and SuperMario, brucebruce and sunshine, all of us talking, drinking and eating made eL’s stories come alive in my head.

I don’t know what more I should do on my blog. (Other than blogging more!!) I just know that I blog because these are my stories and my reflections and I want to tell them. In telling them though, I sometimes wish I could bring all of you into my world – even for just one evening of food and conversation. But these little electronic packets travel faster on the net, across great countries and oceans, faster than you or I can travel. And so for now, you’ll just have to read icyblog.
